How brands get found, cited and recommended by AI
AI visibility engineering is the practice of making a brand easy for AI answer engines to find, understand, verify and cite. It is what decides whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI names you when a buyer asks for a recommendation, and whether what it says about you is right.
Why it matters
Why being recommended by AI matters, even before it’s a big traffic channel
There’s a fair case that AI visibility is overhyped. AI assistants still send a small share of website visits: across 13,770 domains, Conductor found AI referrals made up just over 1% of traffic, most of it from ChatGPT. Judged only by clicks, AI looks like a side channel. Clicks are the wrong measure, for four reasons.
- 1B+monthly users of Google’s AI Mode, which Google says is adding searches, not replacing themAlphabet Q2 2026 earnings
- ~$12Bin incremental annualized sales Amazon credited to its Rufus shopping assistant in 2025Amazon Q4 2025 results, via PPC Land

The decision happens inside the answer
When a buyer asks an assistant which brand to choose, the shortlist is set before anyone clicks. Many of those buyers then search the brand by name or go straight to its site, which analytics records as branded search or direct traffic, not AI. Post-purchase surveys show it: most sales customers credit to an AI assistant arrive with no trackable last click, and when one exists it usually points to Google. The referral number undercounts what the answer actually decided.

Buyers are already moving
In our survey of 1,001 Americans on AI search and trust, 27% already prefer ChatGPT over Google for everyday searches, rising to 41% of 25 to 34 year olds. It shows up at checkout too: shoppers naming an AI assistant as how they found a brand rose more than tenfold in the first half of 2025.

Agents are starting to shop for people
Every major assistant can now help someone buy, from Amazon and Google to Microsoft and Perplexity (Fig. 3). The early lesson is consistent: in-chat checkout matters less than the recommendation. Walmart’s first ChatGPT checkout converted worse than sending shoppers to its own site, and OpenAI shelved its own checkout to focus on product discovery. The brand the assistant recommends gets the sale. More in how AI agents are changing online shopping.

It isn’t a separate bet from SEO
Most of what makes a brand easy for AI to recommend (pages crawlers can read, clear facts, independent coverage) also supports search rankings. Starting early mostly means doing the fundamentals with a different finish line: being the brand the answer names, and named correctly.

The short version
Four stages: found, trusted, described, chosen
An AI answer engine doesn’t rank ten links. It assembles one answer from the sources it can reach and trust, and it names the brands those sources agree on. To end up in that answer, a brand has to clear four stages, and brands drop out at each one for different reasons.
Each stage maps to layers in the six-layer framework we use to measure AI visibility, if you want the detailed version.
Lasting visibility comes from both layers saying the same thing about you.
- FoundAI crawlers can reach your pages, and your content is structured so a model can lift a clean answer from it.Drops out when: pages are blocked, hidden behind scripts or too vague to quote.Access · Structure
- TrustedThe model can tell who you are, and independent sources (reviews, press, roundups, communities) back you up, so it chooses to cite you.Drops out when: nothing outside your own site agrees with you.Identity · Corroboration
- DescribedWhen AI talks about you, it uses your words and gets the facts right, in what it retrieves and in what it already learned.Drops out when: facts are outdated, inconsistent or contradicted by older data.Language · Integrity
- ChosenThe answer leads to action: a click, a brand search, a call or an inquiry, and you can trace it back to the AI platform that sent it.Drops out when: the answer names you, but nothing makes the next step easy.Conversion · Attribution

Questions
Common questions about AI visibility
Is AI visibility just SEO with a new name?
Related, not identical. SEO optimizes for ranking a clickable link; AI visibility optimizes for being the source a model chooses to draw from in a single generated answer, often with no click at all. The underlying discipline overlaps heavily; the unit of success doesn’t.
What’s the difference between AI visibility, GEO and AEO?
They describe the same goal from different angles. Generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) are the tactics; AI visibility is the outcome you measure: whether AI assistants mention, cite and accurately describe your brand.
Is AI search big enough to invest in yet?
By clicks alone, not yet for most brands: AI assistants send around 1% of website visits. But the recommendation happens in the answer, before the click, and much of the resulting demand shows up as branded search or direct traffic. The work also overlaps heavily with SEO, so it rarely means choosing one over the other.
Does optimizing for AI answers hurt Google rankings?
Not inherently. What makes content easy for a model to cite (clear structure, direct answers, real authority) largely overlaps with what supports rankings. The risk is stripping useful depth out of content to make it terser “for AI”, which can hurt both at once.
Can anyone guarantee AI will recommend a brand?
No. AI answers are generated fresh each time and models are updated continually, so there is no way to lock in a citation. What is realistic is shifting the probability in your favor through consistent, credible signals, and measuring that shift over time.
How long does it take to see a difference?
It varies by platform and by how much authority a brand already has. Durable change usually takes months of consistent work, closer to organic SEO timelines than to a paid campaign.
